"You Don't Own Me" -She Said to Beauty Standards, Everywhere.

How to say goodbye to your toxic relationship with the Big Beauty Industry and feel beautiful doing it.

Since you were little you've probably seen women on screens, the type of women you always thought you should be, and you bought all the right make up, and all the right hygiene products, you dieted, you worked out, you squeezed in to sizes too small and drowned in the cosmetics isles so big. It's not just ads in the magazines either; with social media, beauty and how you attain it are virtually everywhere! Now you have a bathroom cabinet full of tubes and jars, but still don't feel fulfilled with the person looking back at you in the mirror.

I'm here to tell you that you can absolutely break the cycle of buying, and throwing away and then buying more again. You don't have to have an overstocked bathroom with plastic bottle upon plastic bottle of lotion, or shampoo, or make up that doesn't make you feel happy.

The billion dollar beauty industry is actually pretty ugly, creating over 120 billion units of packaging every year. The packaging is the number one contributor to plastic production in the world and number one offender for plastic waste pollution. Cosmetics are wrapped in plastic and cover already packaged creams and toothpaste that do not require another layer of material, making the products more expensive for the manufacturer and the consumer; contributing to deforestation, increasing water consumption, and CO2 emissions. Although it is easier and safer to transport and store, and visually more appealing to shelf products like toothpaste in boxes, it is not a necessity. The Beauty Industry thrives on making you continue to purchase whatever the product of the month is, and then it's over packaged so not only is it not fulfilling your needs, but it's producing catastrophic plastic waste.

I recommend doing something with purpose. The first step is NOT to throw away everything in your bathroom, that just adds to the problem in our landfills and oceans. Be mindful about your use and replace with eco friendly products as you finish other ones. Swap out for a bamboo toothbrush, buy that tin of cheek tint that is 100% recyclable. Get one thing at a time and slowly transition and as you change your view of how you're leaving the planet looking on the outside, you will feel better on the inside. Feel powerful that you don't contribute to that scary number of plastic packaged TRASH up there and Take Control of how you feel about yourself and what you're leaving for the next round of beautifully strong, empowered women.

The Big Bad Beauty Industry doesn't own you. There are products out there that are plastic free and sustainably sourced. You are powerful and strong, and confident and beautiful on the inside and out, and you can choose to refuse plastic and still look amazing!
